Enamel pins

About 1 inch · soft or hard enamel · rubber clutch

A hard enamel pin, color polished flush with the metal line
Flush face. Color and metal in one plane.

An enamel pin is a small metal badge with color sitting in the fields the metal holds. A typical lapel face is about three-quarters of an inch to an inch and a quarter. The back is a post and a butterfly clutch. Hard enamel is filled, ground, and polished so color and metal share one plane. Soft enamel leaves the line standing and the color lower.

Feel the face

Run a finger across a finished pin. That is the test. Hard enamel is a single shiny surface, jewelry-like. Soft enamel is a tactile drawing: ridges around each field, color recessed like a tiny tray. Neither finish is a different kind of pin. Same needle. Same clutch. The choice is surface, line, and shine.

Alchemy Merch puts the finger test plainly: with hard enamel, everything is smooth, shiny, and flush; with soft enamel the outlines stand and the color sits lower. PinMart describes the hard-enamel result as a flat, glossy surface that feels sleek to the touch. A cloisonné field is the same idea taken toward glass: color held in a metal cell. For a visitor, it is still enamel in a metal wall.

The back

Pinch the butterfly wings to seat the clutch. Do not yank it off without pinching; that bends the post and chews the fabric. A rubber clutch is kinder on a cap. A locking clutch is the one you want on a bag. Two posts show up on a larger face. The cloth decides that.

Hard enamel faces scratch. Leave air between them. After an Orlando rain shower, the polished face wipes clean. Soft enamel can hold a little dust in the line; a soft cloth clears it. Do not leave a face down on a hotel dresser next to sunscreen.
